An urgent appeal for PACE

Bericht door GripGrap »

Wellington, New Zealand, 9 March 2011 An urgent appeal for PACE Dear friends As many of you know I have an emotional tie to West Papua( Former Dutch New Guinea). I was born in Merauke in 1952. My father, Jan Pouwer, was an Anthropologist and our family lived in Former Dutch New Guinea up until the end of May 1962, when it became clear that West Papua was going to be handed over to Indonesia. My family subsequently immigrated to Wellington, New Zealand, where I have lived for many years. Off and on I have kept track of Papua and I am saddened by what has happened to the proud, pragmatic and optimistic Papuans I lived with in my childhood. A number of years ago, I was privileged to meet up with John Rumbiak when he visited New Zealand. He worked for Amnesty International to promote the rights of his people. To me, he is the Dalai Lama of Papua. It made me aware of how individuals CAN and DO take a stand against all odds. It also made me wonder if I could contribute to the wellbeing of the indigenous Papuan people in some way. Three years ago, I returned to Holland to be with my father in the last years of his life. In 2009 I started to work as a volunteer for PACE (Stichting Papua Cultureel Erfgoed). I became involved with an oral history project on the Sterrengebergte Expedition of 1959. I interviewed 13 different members of this amazing expedition, my father among them. Soon I became aware that the PACE website contains many valuable historic and cultural heritage resources and that the foundation was in the process of further developing the website in three languages: Dutch, English and Bahasa Indonesia. This is a part of making heritage information more accessible internationally. PACE aims to repatriate cultural heritage that exists in the Netherlands to Papuans who are a part of the diaspora and those in Papua, Indonesia. I became a translator for PACE and worked on the Dutch-English translation of theme pages. PACE now also has links to the new Papua Portal and to social network sites such as Flickr, Facebook and youtube. For example, follow the link below showing really interesting video footage in memory of Viktor Kaisiëpo, who was a true ambassador for his people. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPYVcy3u8x4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPYVcy3u8x4 If you have never visited www.papuaerfgoed.org, take the time to view it for yourself. Papuan culture is under threat (http://www.tanahku.west-papua.nl/ ). It is imperative that Papuan resources in the Netherlands are preserved and made accessible for future generations. Since the Special Autonomy Law of 2000, schools in Papua are allowed to create their own curriculum. But the research report published by the Faith-based network on West Papua in May 2010 ‘Communities,Children and teachers in Papua: Hand in hand for a better future’ clearly shows that a lot needs to be done to realize this future. One of the key recommendations of the report is to develop a contextualized curriculum relevant to Papuan lives. There is a chronic lack of such resources. PACE could play a crucial role in providing relevant material to create educational resources to enhance Papua pride and identity. My personal dream is for the material on the PACE website to be made accessible at Papua schools in a form useful to teachers and students alike. I have been a teacher for many years and I hope to be involved with providing learning resources using Papuan cultural heritage. However, in the present economic malaise, PACE funding has been cut and all the staff of PACE have been laid off. The rent has been paid until the end of March. We need at least €5000 a year to keep the website going. Please help to keep the PACE website live. The economic tide will turn. It always does. At the moment all former staff and the many volunteers are working hard to keep PACE afloat. Most of the funding is project based and we have had an unusually large number of declined funding applications for the coming financial year. Like many other charitable trusts PACE is struggling. Only 4% of our funding currently comes from individual donation: many supporters are former residents of Dutch New Guinea and this group is dwindling, as we know. I have just translated the PACE 2010 financial report into English and the now former director, Sjoerd Jaarsma, is in the process of applying for overseas grants to fund current projects. Meanwhile, we need to keep the website going. Please support this worthwhile endeavour. Make a donation or become a permanent friend of Papua Cultureel Erfgoed. If you are in the Netherlands donate to: St. Papua Cultureel Erfgoed, Utrecht ING Bank 5183494 If you are elsewhere go to: http://www.papuaerfgoed.org/en and make a donation online. Do pass this request on to as many of your family & friends as possible. Francesca Pouwer PACE vrijwilliger
